The Classic Soul Experience, Tuesdays 6pm – 8pm GMT
Gary Richards DJ Presenter started his DJ career at the tender age of 14 at The Belfry under 18’s nightclub in Beckenham (now The Bridge Bar). Those days his close friends where the late Robbie May and Nigel Owen, both presenters on one of the pioneering London Soul Stations JFM.
December 1981 after an introduction to JFM’s owner Brian Anthony an opportunity arose for a live show on the station on Christmas Eve in an overnight position from midnight until 6am. A 6 hour introduction to broadcasting soul over London Town.
Gary then went on to do the weekend breakfast shows for the next two years. If you remember those days of JFM and the breakfast shows, you will also remember Eric in the Sky delivering the traffic news!
Eric in the Sky (JFM’s Travel Reporter) was a character created by Gary who did all of the travel reports in a Mr Bean type voice speaking through a personal fan, sounded like he was in a helicopter. It was the most hilarious thing as people who listened to the show actually thought JFM had a travel report helicopter.
After JFM got closedown in late 1984 Gary then went on to join LWR to take on the Saturday drive time show from 6 – 8 pm and Sunday Late morning show from 10 – 12 staying there for 3 years.
In 1997 Gary emigrated to Canada where he now lives, but has not forgotten the old country as visits a couple of times a year to hang out with old friends and savoury the London soul music scene.
Join Gary Richards on Chocolate Radio live from Canada from 6pm until 8pm UK time every Tuesday where you can relive those days of old and enjoy the latest’s music of the day all in one show. You never know Eric may pop in now and again.
