Andy Davies

Show: Classic & Northern Soul

Monday and Friday 0900 – 11.00am. GMT

Brought up in a small village in Dorset, Andy Davies has always had an interest in music. Various failed attempts at an early age to learn guitar did not deter him from always wanting to learn more about various musical genres.

A teenage crush on Debbie Harry meant that the Blondie album ‘Parallel Lines’ took pride of place in his collection and using just the one record deck he possessed, he practiced his presenting style whilst switching from one 7 inch to another!

Studying for a degree in London, Andy became the entertainment officer for the student union promoting live band events and being the DJ at the weekly Friday Frolic.

A cheeky phone call to Emma Freud at Greater London Radio (GLR) resulted in an invite to the station where Andy met a very young Chris Evans and an offer from him to be one of his phone answerers on his new nightly show.

A move to Chris’ “Around at Chris’ and his Missus” and a job offer from GLR with a cult following for the Saturday show as Andy became producer and sidekick. Andy also got his own one hour Saturday show “Back In An Hour”

Radio One now beckoned and a reunion with Emma Freud as producer of her lunchtime show before the glamour of TV meant a producing job on Channel 4’s “Big Breakfast” followed by promotion to daytime editor including creating the show’s “Eggs on Legs” summer roadshow where live music once again took a starring role.

Various producing jobs in television resulted and a second meeting with Jonathan Ross (the first had been at GLR where Andy gatecrashed Jonathan’s home live on air) – with Jonathan he co-created the TV show “It’s Only TV But I Like It”.

An offer for Jonathan to work at Virgin Radio meant a reunion with Chris Evans as Andy became Jonathan’s producer and sidekick.

Radio 2 then came calling and Jonathan and Andy began what became an 11 year tenure resulting in numerous broadcasting awards including 4 Sony Gold Radio Awards. The radio show also ¬†transferred to BBC 1 where Andy continued his role as Jonathan’s stooge and sidekick.

Andy was also at this time running his own live music club in Stoke Newington and DJing Northern Soul nights in the area.

A move to Spain and now France with the family followed and the creation of his website which promotes live music concerts, the management of artists and songwriters as well as DJing soul and funk events.

Andy is delighted to be joining Chocolate Radio where he will play a big slice of soul, a side order of funk and an accompaniment of reggae and boogie.
